TUC day of action
The TUC is holding a day of action on 28 November, as part of its ongoing campaign calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
The International Federation of Journalists' records show at least 136 Palestinian journalists have been killed since 7 October 2023.
Since the outset of the conflict the NUJ has repeatedly condemned the appalling actions of Hamas and called for immediate returns of all hostages. The union has condemned the rising death toll and impact on the Palestinian population, and repeatedly highlighted how the Israeli government’s actions have led to a disproportionately high death toll amongst journalists – with mounting evidence of targeted attacks against reporters and media workers operating in the most challenging of conditions.
The NUJ backs global calls from journalists’ unions and the IFJ for an independent investigation into all killings and attacks on journalists and repeats its call for an immediate cessation of all violence, a lasting ceasefire and stepped up efforts by the international community to achieve a sustainable peace in the region.
NUJ members can show support for the TUC’s call by discussing appropriate ways in their chapels and branches to show support.
Journalists working across the BBC and wider public service broadcasting have particular and important duties in relation to impartiality and working within specific workplace social media policies.
A meaningful and practical way NUJ members can show solidarity and support is through donations to the International Federation of Journalists’ Safety Fund – in the recent period NUJ members have donated generously to help journalists in Palestine, in Ukraine and also Afghanistan.
The IFJ Safety Fund has proved a lifeline of journalists in Gaza and NUJ members have donated generously over the past year. We know colleagues remain in need of emergency assistance and medical equipment.
According to records held by the Palestinian Journalists' Syndicate, 21 local radio stations, 15 local and international news agencies, 15 TV stations, six local newspapers, three broadcasting towers, eight print media and 13 media institutions have been destroyed over the past 13 months.
On 19 November, the IFJ announced 22 media organisations in Palestine had been awarded grants totalling $1m as part of efforts to support public interest journalism. Find out more on the project.
