Our student membership is open to anyone aged 16 or over who is studying journalism, media, publishing, public relations and communications, photography, or other related courses. You can also join if you’re involved in online, broadcast or print student media.
We're here to help you navigate your way to a career in the industry. This includes:
- Making connections through your local branch where you'll find out what's going in the media locally and be able to ask for advice
- Full access to our website, including reporting guidance and useful contacts
- Access to NUJ events and training
- Guest speakers for your course or student-organised events
- Student press card to help identify you as a legitimate student newsgatherer outside of your campus
As an NUJ member, you'll also be an important part of our collective voice and campaigning on issues including increasing diversity in the industry, promoting ethical journalism and defending press freedom. Some of our recent campaigns include:
Students can join the NUJ for just £10 or €15 a year.
And when you've graduated and are ready to upgrade to temporary or full membership, you'll qualify for a discount for the first 12 months.
If you have a problem at work at any stage of your career, we're here to help with everything from advice and representation to legal support and professional training.
In good company...
Aodhán Roberts, an NUJ member who joined as a student, said:
"When I joined, it was primarily to get a press card, which allowed me to work as a journalist with proper recognition, access, and safety. I never expected to need the union beyond that - but that assumption did not hold.
"Over time, I have had to rely on the union on more than one occasion. Having access to representation, legal advice, and practical support at critical moments has been invaluable. It meant I could deal with challenges confidently and professionally, rather than facing them alone."
"Until something actually happens, it is easy to underestimate how exposed you can be without that backing."
