NUJ seeks clarity for Jewish News and Jewish Chronicle journalists

15 April 2020

Following the announcement of the Jewish Chronicle and Jewish News closure and staff redundancies, the Kessler Foundation, the charitable owner of the Jewish Chronicle, has now submitted an offer to claim the assets of both newspaper titles. The Jewish News reports the organisation wish to maintain one merged newspaper.

Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said:

"Our members at the Jewish Chronicle and Jewish News need urgent clarity about the implications of yesterday's announcement. At present staff and freelances are in a state of limbo and uncertainty, without answers to basic questions about the future. We are engaging with both organisations to raise our members' concerns and to understand the drivers behind these decisions. At this time of national disruption we are calling on all employers to ensure they consult meaningfully and explore a broad range of options that could protect titles and the livelihoods of our members."
