Why NUJ members will join the Together Alliance demo on 28 March
This Saturday NUJ members from across the UK and Ireland will march together in hope and solidarity against the far right.
In September 2025 around 110,000 people attended Tommy Robinson’s ‘Unite the Kingdom’ march - a larger rally than any held by the British Union of Fascists (BUF) in the 1930s.
However, there are far more people committed to fairness, decency and community than those amplifying voices of division and hatred. That’s why many NUJ members will be joining the Together Alliance demonstration in London on 28 March.
Our members feel the impact of the rise of the far right both professionally and personally. Many members face increasing hostility in their work, particularly when covering anti-immigration protests or challenging misinformation, with Black, Asian and women journalists disproportionately targeted with verbal, physical and online abuse. This is not just an attack on individuals - it is an attack on media freedom and the diversity of perspectives that our union fights for and that our democracy depends on.
This is why standing together is not optional. Solidarity is essential in resisting the far right.
Laura Davison, NUJ general secretary, said:
“The NUJ has always been at the forefront of the fight for equality and justice. The Together Alliance march is an opportunity for us to stand together, defend our communities, and challenge the fear and division that is being deliberately stoked across our society.
“The burden of fighting the far right must not fall on those who are most targeted by it. It is not the responsibility of those who experience racism and discrimination to fight these battles alone. The responsibility belongs to all of us. As members of the trade union movement, we have the power to organise, mobilise and show what true solidarity looks like.”
Roger McKenzie, NUJ Black Members’ Council co-chair said:
“The March 28 celebration is not just about anti-racism. It is also standing up for the idea of community and also for trade unionism. These are both under attack as they represent people coming together for the common good.
“Let’s bring the biggest possible number of NUJ members together in London on March 28 to celebrate unity and our common good.”
