The Observer - vote of no confidence ballot results

  • 11 Sep 2025

Staff, freelances and casuals at The Observer before its transfer to Tortoise Media were balloted earlier this year with the overwhelming majority returning a vote confirming they had no confidence in Katharine Viner, Guardian Editor-in Chief.

Following the industrial dispute at the Guardian and Observer earlier this year, members of the NUJ who were on the staff of the Observer, or were contracted by the newspaper as freelances or casuals, took part in a ballot that asked them whether they wished to register a vote of no confidence in Katharine Viner, the editor in chief of the Guardian and Observer before the Observer's transfer to Tortoise Media.

There were 51 responses and 96% voted to agree with the statement "I have no confidence in the Guardian Editor-in Chief."
