New freelance survey

  • 11 Sep 2023

Freelance members are invited to complete a survey seeking views to help inform and shape support provided.

The survey should take around 10 minutes to complete and research is being conducted by a team at the CREATe Research Centre at the University of Glasgow.

Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said:

"Freelancers form a large proportion of our industry contributing greatly to its success yet face ongoing difficulty obtaining fair pay rates and conditions. Journalists weathered the pandemic’s numerous challenges including financial hardship and struggles obtaining commissions and whilst campaigning from the NUJ, ALCS and others in industry saw barriers to government support eventually removed for many, countless others were left with no government support or safety net. Your views on earnings, contract negotiations and licensing agreements are crucial to understanding how freelances can be best supported now and into the future.

"Completing this survey will allow for necessary data collation across subjects, including on your approaches to moral rights and copyright, providing invaluable insight and informing next steps on necessary protections for freelances."

The research team can be contacted via email at [email protected]. After completing the survey,  you'll be eligible to enter a prize draw to win one of five cash prizes of £50 each.
