A Question of Authority: an evening with Jackie Weaver

Manchester & Salford NUJ presents Jackie Weaver in conversation with Phil Morcom and Chris Frost.

It is almost a year since Jackie Weaver woke up to the news that she and Handforth Parish Council were trending on Twitter following the infamous Zoom meeting which brought a bit of light relief to last year’s lockdown.

Twelve months later, Jackie, who is Chief Officer of the Cheshire Association of Local Councils, will be speaking at a Manchester and Salford NUJ branch webinar about the importance of local government and the role journalists play in reporting meetings. She will also be reflecting on the way Zoom has changed meetings and the shock of becoming a celebrity overnight.

Jackie has published a book You Do Have The Authority Here! If you would like a review copy, please contact the Branch’s PR co-ordinator Tim Taylor  [email protected]

The event will be chaired by Chris Frost, Emeritus Professor of Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University and Chair of the NUJ’s Ethics Council. Chris was a newspaper journalist and editor before moving into education and he is an expert in media ethics.

Former Leeds and Wakefield NUJ Branch Chair Phil Morcom will be the third member of the panel. Until recently, Phil was Chair of the NUJ's Public Relations and Communications Council. He is currently a member of the communications team at the UK Health Security Agency and has also worked in communications at Leeds City Council, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the DWP. He was previously a journalist on local and national newspapers and has edited a trade union magazine.

There will be a Q and A session after the speakers. If you have any colleagues who are not NUJ members but would like to attend the event, they are very welcome to join the discussion.
