Join the NUJ's Ethics council online on Monday 29 January at 5.30pm, for an hour-long event chaired by Professor Chris Frost, Ethics council chair.
Chris Mullin, journalist and former MP, will share his account of victory against West Midlands Police in the 2022 court case brought to compel him to reveal his source. A case closely monitored by both NUJ members and the media for its possible wide ranging ramifications, members can hear directly from Mullin on his experience and why he remained steadfast in his position with the backing of the NUJ, to protect his source.
The NUJ’s code of conduct states journalists must produce no material likely to lead to hatred or discrimination on several grounds including disability. Hear from Dr Natasha Hirst, NUJ Photographers' council chair and disabled members' representative on the union's National Executive Council. As a former Equality Council chair and the NUJ's current president, Hirst is well-placed to explore why the code has remained core to the work of journalists since its publication in 1936.
Professor Chris Frost is emeritus professor of Journalism at Liverpool John Moores University. He will explore principles in the code, explaining the work of the Ethics council and function of the Ethics hotline.
Share your thoughts in the planned Q&A session and invite colleagues to attend. Tickets are free with attendance open to all. Registration is required.
