Claudia Jones Memorial Lecture 2024

How can the activism of Claudia Jones Help us to Understand the 2024 United States Presidential Election?

SPEAKERS: Margaret Kimberley, Executive Editor and Senior Columnist of Black Agenda Report.

Roger McKenzie, acting Chair of the NUJ Black Members’ Council.

This year's National Union of Journalists Claudia Jones Memorial Lecture comes at an important moment weeks after Donald Trump becomes president elect for the United States.

Claudia Jones born in Trinidad migrated with her family to the USA, deported in 1955 as a result of her political activities she came to live in the UK, founding the first Black newspaper, The West Indian Gazette and Afro-Asian Caribbean News and becoming what some ascribe as the mother of the Notting Hill Carnival.

Claudia Jones was not just an excellent journalist, but she was also an internationally important activist who worked to link the theories of Black liberation to practical action.

The re-election of Trump poses many challenges to Black people in the US and the UK and reignites the toxic environment faced by journalists under his last administration.

We are delighted to announce that the guest speaker for this year’s free webinar event hosted by the NUJ’s Black Members’ council will be renowned Black journalist and activist, Margaret Kimberley the Executive Editor and Senior Columnist of Black Agenda Report and the current host of the Black Agenda Radio podcast, which is also heard on Pacifica stations WBAI in New York and WPFW in Washington.

This event is open to NUJ members and non-members. Places are free, but registration is required. The webinar will be recorded and published on the NUJ website.
