NUJ expresses concern over media threats in Dublin

The National Union of Journalists has expressed grave concern at bomb threats issued to Irish media organisations today (6 November).

RTÉ, Newstalk, Virgin Media and Mediahuis were the target of bomb threats. The RTÉ complex was evacuated but RTE Radio One remained on air from a mobile broadcaster.

Mediahuis evacuated Independent House in Dublin city centre, as a precautionary member; threats were contained in emails to the media organisations.

Séamus Dooley, NUJ assistant general secretary, said:

"These threats are deeply worrying. Any attempt to silence, threaten or frighten journalists represents a threat to media freedom and to democracy.

"Our members deserve credit for the manner in which they responded to this sinister development.

"All staff felt under threat and it is vital that media organisation reassess safety measures in light of these developments.

"The threats must be seen in the context of global threats issued against airlines and schools. These threats seek to undermine fundamental freedoms - the right to travel, education, to work without fear and the right to freedom of expression."
