NUJ wins recognition at POLITICO

  • 23 Oct 2026

The NUJ has secured a recognition agreement at POLITICO following months of thorough negotiations and an arbitration process.

POLITICO becomes the third outlet owned by Axel Springer where the union has won recognition, empowering members to use their collective voice to shape the future of their workplace.

Numerous other publications have also won recognition with the NUJ in the past year, including Wyvex Media and The Lancet and Cell Press, where members are set to go on strike for the second time next week over pay.

In gaining recognition at POLITICO, the NUJ had to apply to the Central Arbitration Committee (CAC) after initial disagreement over the composition of the bargaining unit. Following a ruling in favour of the NUJ, there was also a month-long period of negotiations to ensure that the agreement enabled members to pursue all their industrial priorities.

Alex Maguire, NUJ organiser, said:

“This is a moment to celebrate. It shows what can be achieved through dedication, resilience, and collective endeavor. Our members at POLITICO now have a solid platform to work constructively with the employer to negotiate and bring about positive changes in the workplace. There are also sector-wide challenges - from the erosion of pay to increasing threats around AI in newsrooms - that must be confronted through unified action. A strong chapel backed by NUJ recognition is an important frontline defence for responding to those issues and protecting workers’ rights.”

A representative from the newly-formed NUJ POLITICO chapel said:

"We're grateful to the NUJ for its help in securing recognition for POLITICO staff and look forward to collaborative discussions between the union and the company. We want to help POLITICO continue to thrive and unionisation is the latest sign of its increasingly powerful voice in Britain's media landscape."

The NUJ continues to support members across the media industry in securing fair pay, transparency and collective bargaining rights in the workplace. If you're looking to organise and unionise your workplace and would like the NUJ's support, please contact [email protected].
