Public order situations present a number of challenges for journalists covering them. Journalists can come under attack from all sides – demonstrators or rioters often do not wish to be identified, while the police may think journalists are getting in the way or do not wish their activities to be recorded.
The London Photographers' Branch of the NUJ has produced two tip-sheets on public order situations, one general one for photographers and another specifically for women:
- Public order tip sheet: Covering riot and public order
- Women’s Safety at Work Tip Sheet: Women's safety at work
The union will also, when possible, issue guidance for members covering specific events, for example:
- Urgent notice for NUJ members covering EDL in Rochdale (9 June 2012)
- Advice to NUJ members reporting on civil unrest around UK (9 August 2011)
