The George Viner Memorial Fund

Ever since the fund was founded in 1986, our work has been supported by a range of people involved in the media industry – well-known journalists, industry leaders and leading campaigners for racial equality. We have also been lucky to have sustained and committed support from NUJ members.

Samira Ahmed

"In a trade where a famous surname still helps you get ahead, I'm delighted the George Viner fund helps young journalists with talent, not connections, get a chance to make their mark."

Samira Ahmed, presenter/reporter, BBC

Gary Younge"The media industry cannot afford to lock out the most creative, dynamic talent available. The George Viner Memorial Fund supports that talent in our black communities."

Gary Younge, Guardian columnist

Diane Abbott"The media in the UK can only report sensitively on the black and ethnic minority communities if people from those communities are in newsrooms, taking part in editorial decisions. The George Viner fund makes that possible."

Diane Abbott, MP, Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington

Shami Chakrabati"I thank the George Viner fund for making journalists and journalism more representative of the whole community."

Shami Chakrabarti, director of Liberty (The National Council for Civil Liberties)

Tony Benn"The George Viner fund helps journalists and that helps us because it will raise the quality of our media."

Tony Benn, parliamentarian and NUJ Member of Honour
