Uphold journalists' rights in data storage law, union warns

15 November 2017

The NUJ has called on Minister for Justice Charlie Flanagan to incorporate the findings of former Chief Justice John Murray into proposed new legislation governing data storage.

Séamus Dooley, Irish Secretary, told the Oireachtas Committee on Justice & Equality that the right of journalists to protect confidential sources of information is already recognised in international law and should be enshrined in domestic legislation. Journalists, he said, were not seeking new rights but were seeking to have the rights already upheld at ECHR to be vindicated.
