Unions at Al Jazeera English vote for industrial action over pay

27 March 2018

Ballots of NUJ and Bectu union members at Al Jazeera English have voted a strong mandate for industrial action over pay at the broadcaster.

NUJ members voted by 90.3 per cent for industrial action.

Following three years of negotiations, including the involvement of the arbitration service ACAS, there has been no movement on pay. The two unions won recognition for collective bargaining at the company and have since attempted to move to a more transparent and structured pay system, plus salary increases.

While progress has been made in other areas of the unions’ 2015 claim, including on redundancy policy, expenses and overtime, the management has declined to engage in pay negotiations, despite the increased cost of living during this period.

The unions believe industrial action is needed to send a firm message to Al Jazeera, but are prepared to continue negotiations, if meaningful.

Sue Harris, NUJ national organiser broadcasting, said:

"The turnout and result of the ballot show the strength of feeling among NUJ members. Management needs to agree to a meaningful and tangible settlement with the joint unions, restoring the lost value of their salaries and which they will soon be able to see in their monthly pay packets."

The Al Jazeera chapel responded to the result saying:

"We went into pay talks three years ago expecting to negotiate over percentages. In that time Al Jazeera management has refused to improve on 0 per cent - effectively handing all its staff an annual pay cut, once inflation is taken into account. The ballot result shows our members are not prepared to accept this."

The result of the NUJ ballot was:
