Support grows for EDM opposing BBC cuts

23 March 2010

A parliamentary early day motion (EDM) calling on the government to encourage the BBC to continued support BBC 6Music and BBC Asian Network has attracted more than 90 supporting MPs from all UK parties.

Tom Watson, Labour Party MP, proposed the EDM, which congratulates 6 Music and Asian Network for acting as a source of talent for the BBC and other media. It also notes that both 6 Music and Asian Network reach out to audiences not otherwise well served by the BBC.

Jeremy Dear, NUJ general secretary, said:

"While the parliamentary motion is just one plank of the campaign to defeat BBC management's plans to impose £600m of cost savings, the fact that it has already garnered more support from MPs than almost any other EDM I can remember indicates that it will help in the campaign.
"I'm calling on all NUJ members to urge their local MP to add their name to the EDM, if they haven't already"
