NUJ president Tim Dawson was treated to a North East welcome with pie and peas when he visited members at the Sunderland, Shields and Hartlepool branch.
Tim outlined how the union had put itself on a firmer financial footing and how membership was growing, as well as listening to members' concerns.
Local concerns included eligibility of applications for NUJ membership, as the increasingly fragmented nature of the industry meant it was harder for bona-fide journalists to produce a portfolio, to distinguish them from a blogger who wanted a press card.
The president said the union had been representing freelancers since its inception, and agreed there may be a need to reorganise the ways branch meetings are held.
