RTÉ Radio nominated for top award at New York Festival
21 June 2011
RTÉ Radio has been nominated broadcaster of the year at the New York Festival Awards. The NUJ has congratulated the Irish broadcaster.
In addition to the top award, RTÉ Radio programmes secured a further 16 awards, including seven awards plus a Grand Award for RTÉ Radio 1's 'Documentary on One', six awards for RTÉ Radio 1's 'Drama on One', one award for RTÉ Lyric FM and one award for RTÉ Gold, one of RTÉ Radio's seven digital services.
Séamus Dooley, NUJ Irish secretary, said the award "highlights the value of public service broadcasting and reflected the wealth of talent within RTÉ across all platforms and at every level of the organisation."
Barry McCall, NUJ vice-president, said the award underlined the importance of securing the future of public service broadcasting in Ireland and was a timely reminder of "the unique place occupied by RTÉ on the cultural landscape."
Séamus Dooley said:
"We are fortunate within Ireland in having a rich diversity of media. Within the commercial broadcasting sector there are many fine outlets competing in a tough market place. The public service obligations placed upon RTÉ are an additional burden, but these awards provide international affirmation of the fact that RTÉ Radio not only meets these obligations, but does so with style and distinction.
"It is recognition of the quality of Irish broadcasting and will be celebrated not just by RTÉ staff but by those who are served by RTÉ on a daily basis."
Barry McCall added:
"For RTÉ, this is the equivalent of the US Open. We in the NUJ are fully supportive of public service broadcasting and believe in the public service ethos which is reflected in these award-winning entries. At a time when public service broadcasting is under threat from a number of quarters, this is a cause for genuine celebration."
