Public services strike action
8 July 2014

Phil Morcom, co-chair NUJ Public Relations & Communications Industrial Council, said:
"Millions of workers across the public sector will be taking industrial action and withdrawing their labour on Thursday 10 July. Among them will be journalists working for local authorities, central government, essential services and elsewhere. We'll be the people who work in press offices and internal communications, the people who produce leaflets and update websites and many more, a really broad range of communications professionals.
"Lots will be members of unions such as the NUT, FBU, PCS, Unite Unison and GMB. Hopefully most will also have NUJ membership too. All will be showing that they are not happy with the austerity the government is imposing on workers who day-in, day-out deliver services for society but are told they must take real terms pay cuts, higher workloads, redundancy and worse pensions, despite not being responsible for the economic circumstances used to justify their worsening work situation.
"As co-chair of the NUJ's Public Relations and Communications Council, I offer our backing to those taking action. As well as that, knowing that no one actively likes having to withdraw their labour, ask those who can to support strike action aimed at bringing government back into meaningful negotiations which can offer a fair result to the workers who, despite all the difficulties, still deliver some of the best public services in the world."
