Barry McCall, NUJ president, was given a warm Welsh welcome on his first visit to a Welsh executive council (WEC) meeting in Cardiff.
Barry said that as a result of the recovery plan package agreed last year the union was now in a much healthier position.
The NUJ is currently recruiting and this has been helped by the launch of the new website and work done to contact lapsed members.
He paid tribute to the work of WEC and "tenacious" Welsh NEC members and emphasised that the NUJ was not just about journalists’ jobs, pay and conditions, but about quality and ethics in journalism - as the union's work on Leveson and other campaigns have shown.
WEC chair, Ken Smith, was congratulated on his work and veteran north Wales member Roy Jones, who made a surprise announcement that he was retiring from WEC because of other commitments, was told he would be greatly missed.
