PR workers told to contact NUJ over pay discrimination

The gender pay gap in the PR and comms industry is 21 per cent, an increase from 2016, according to the PR and Communications census produced by industry body PRCA and PRWeek.
The gap has grown from 17.8 per cent in 2016 and is the equivalent of £11,364 - or £2,253 more than it was two years ago.
This is despite the seven per cent increase in female managing directors since two years ago, said the report.
Edelman UK, UK’s biggest PR agency, which reported a mean gap of 21.33 per cent this year, said it had been caused by the male population being skewed towards middle to senior roles.
Fiona Swarbrick, NUJ senior national organiser for PR & comms, said:
"We are saddened but not surprised that the gender pay gap continues to increase in the PR industry. What is now important is whether employers take measures to remedy this situation. Whilst some positive ideas are coming through, such as improvements in flexible working, it seems that nobody will address the elephant in the room. It is the lack of pay transparency which allows pay inequality to flourish undetected. Anyone working in PR who would be interested in working with the NUJ to tackle the problem in their own workplace should get in touch."
