Passion boosts quality journalism in South Wales

27 April 2011

The National Theatre of Wales production of The Passion with Michael Sheen has helped boost the work of NUJ members providing a not-for-profit community news service in Port Talbot.

More than a dozen professional journalists involved in the project covered the live events taking place over Easter in Port Talbot during the production of The Passion, which generated international media coverage.

NUJ member Ken Smith explained the project:

"We're a not-for-profit community co-operative here to give Port Talbot the local news and information service it deserves. Our volunteers are professional journalists who put in a few hours a week to make it work.
"The main aim is an online hyperlocal news network for Port Talbot giving townsfolk the chance to keep in touch and to learn skills in research, writing, photography and IT.
"Covering The Passion was a great exercise for the project. It was an amazing spectacle which involved tens of thousands of people in the community."

The results of the work by the journalists' co-op can be seen at The Port Talbot Magnet.
