Obituary for NUJ member Ted Simpson
14 January 2015
Ted Simpson, for many years a leading member of the NUJ, died on Monday 12 January aged 94.
After a spell on the Daily Express he joined the Evening Standard as a sub-editor in 1948, retiring in 1985. As FOC at the Standard he won the respect and confidence of the management.
As an active member of the London Evening Paper branch Ted did much to help colleagues when two of the three London evening papers, The Star and London Evening News, closed.
For a while he took over from the late Alan Hutt as Editor of the Journalist magazine. He was an NUJ vice-president, honorary life member and NEC member.
In his final years at the Standard Ted was stone-sub in the composing room. On the day he retired the composing room staff gave him the honour of a 'banging-out'.
Ted leaves a son Ian. His wife Eileen pre-deceased him.
The funeral will be at the Hereford Crematorium, Westfaling Street, Hereford, HR4OJE on Monday 26 January at 10.30.
