NUJ welcomes government's National Insurance decision

7 September 2018

The government's decision to shelve the scrapping of Class 2 National Insurance contributions  has been welcomed by the NUJ. Pamela Morton, NUJ freelance national organiser, said:

"We believe this announcement is good news. Without Class 2 NICs the lowest paid self-employed workers would have had to pay significantly more for credits towards contributory benefits such as the state pension. The Treasury estimated that 300,000 individuals would have been affected by this – including disproportionately affecting women and the part-time self-employed – and what was originally intended to simplify the tax system, ended up with solutions which were far too complicated."
