NUJ welcomes European decision on Hungary
13 September 2018
The union has welcomed the vote by the European Parliament to trigger article 7 of the European Union treaty to ensure press freedom is respected in Hungary.
The move was the first of its kind in the history of the European Union, and it required two-thirds of MEPs to vote to use a special mechanism where a member state can be denied its right to vote in the European Council because it has threatened European common values.
The resolution agreed by the European parliament highlighted press freedom and media plurality as areas of significant concern.
Chris Frost, chair of the NUJ ethics council, said:
"The NUJ welcomes the triggering of article 7. The growing moves by governments around the world to clamp down on journalists and journalism threatens democracy throughout the world and needs to be combatted robustly."
