Tribute to Kate Holmquist

6 August 2019

Tributes have been paid to Irish Times journalist and NUJ member Kate Holmquist who died at the weekend aged 62. Séamus Dooley, Irish Secretary of the NUJ expressed condolences to her family and colleagues in The Irish Times, where she was a chapel member since 1985. He said:

“Kate Holmquist will be remembered as a generous colleague who was especially helpful to freelance journalists and those starting out on their careers. Her vivacious personality shone through in her work, especially as a features writer. She had a natural empathy and an interest in the complexities of everyday life and the business of living. As an American in Ireland her journalism was informed by the curiosity of an outsider. She helped trace significant changes in the social and cultural landscape of the country she came to love with great passion. On behalf of the NUJ, I extend sympathy to her family, to her Irish Times colleagues and to all who mourn her untimely passing.”
