NUJ tribute to Bill O'Herlihy
26 May 2015
The union has paid tribute to former RTÉ broadcaster and PR consultant Bill O’Herlihy, who died yesterday on Monday 25 May.
Extending condolences to the O’Herlihy’s family Séamus Dooley, NUJ Irish secretary described him as "a towering presence on the media landscape who enhanced the image of journalism in Ireland."
Séamus Dooley said:
"Bill was a towering presence on the media landscape. He enhanced the image of journalism in Ireland. He was utterly devoid of cynicism and had a passionate commitment to the concept of public service broadcasting.
"While he was most closely associated in the public mind with sports he began his career as a news journalist. His passing breaks another link with the early days of current affairs within RTÉ. He is remembered as a generous colleague with a sharp news sense, a loyal colleague and a journalist possessed with an innate instinct for what viewers wanted to see and hear."
