NUJ training & courses 2018/19

The NUJ provides free training for reps to help them be effective and confident in their role. This includes: the three-stage reps' course; courses for learning and equality reps; on pensions; advance negotiating skills and advanced representation; on organising and recruitment; and on how to deal with bullying and harassment. The NUJ regularly provides subsidised courses, First Steps in Freelancing and Winning and Negotiating freelance work to help members become effective freelances. Check the training diary for latest dates.
Winning and negotiating freelance work: this one-day NUJ course is for those who have recently gone freelance or want to brush up their skills and will provide ideas on how to win new work and negotiate terms on Friday 21 September in London. More information on the NUJ website.
Tax advice: accountancy firm HW Fisher & Company is running another of its successful seminars on tax for the self-employed in London on Monday 24 September. More information on the NUJ website.
First steps in freelancing: moving to freelance journalism can be daunting. This one-day NUJ course will provide you with practical advice on your first steps as a freelance on Friday 5 October in London. More information and how to reserve your place is on the NUJ website.
Introduction to data in journalism: this one-day course, organised by London Freelance Branch, on Friday 19 October will cover topics such as understanding data and risk, assessing data quality, surveys, data sources such as government and open data, freedom of information, combining and manipulating data and graphing. Dublin Freelance branch's next Freelance Forum will take place on Monday 15 October. There are sessions on podcasting, science writing, pitching to commissioning editors, LinkedIn, reporting family law cases and opportunities for networking. More information on the NUJ website.
The NUJ Cardiff and South East Wales branch's Freelance Salon will take place on Saturday 27 October in Cardiff, where journalists can hear the latest ideas on monetising freelance work and stories of success in online journalism. More information on the NUJ website.
Professional courses (England)
Sign on at the Federation of Entertainment Unions' training website and as a member of the NUJ you will be able to take part in a wide range of free workshops, webinars and online courses, including shooting smarter iPhone/iPad videos; driving traffic to your website; how to run a social media campaign; and writing for business. NUJ Training Wales has a new team and an exciting programme of workshops, courses and events coming up before the end of 2018.
Simon Williams, of Cardiff university, is bringing his Strategic Communications course to St Asaph on Thursday 20 September and media consultant David Banks will be at Glyndwr University in Wrexham running media law workshops for those new to the industry and for experienced journalists on Tuesday 16 October.
NUJ Training Wales is supporting the NUJ Cardiff and South East Wales branch's Freelance Salon on Saturday 27 October at the Radisson Blu, Bute Terrace, Cardiff, where journalists can hear the latest ideas on monetising freelance work and stories of success in online journalism.
Reporting on Poverty on Thursday 8 November is a free one-day event exploring the news media narrative on poverty in Wales in collaboration with the Journalism, Media and Culture School at Cardiff University and Oxfam Cymru.
Women in Sports Journalism on Wednesday 12 December at Cardiff Metropolitan University is a special conference exploring a watershed year for female representation in sports media and will examine the challenges still faced by women building careers in the industry.
