NUJ supports BBC Northern Ireland reporter intimidated by vigilante group
7 February 2018
The NUJ has supported BBC journalist Kevin Magee after the investigative reporter was confronted aggressively and then filmed by members of a self-styled paedophile catcher group, saying the incident was an attack on media freedom and "must be condemned in the strongest manner".
Séamus Dooley, NUJ Irish Secretary, said:
“BBC Northern Ireland journalist Kevin Magee is a journalist of the highest integrity. He was abused and intimidated while carrying out a legitimate news investigation, in the public interest. No group is above the law and there is no place in a democratic society for vigilante groups, regardless of their motives. This attack is an attack on media freedom and must be condemned in the strongest manner."
Gerry Carson, cathaoirleach of the NUJ's Irish Executive Council, said:
“This was a despicable activity and a blatant attempt to intimidate a journalist who was simply carrying out his role as one of the BBC‘s most highly regarded correspondents. Anyone associated with this sort of behaviour does so at the clear risk of breaking the law and brings into question the integrity of whatever they are attempting to achieve.”
