NUJ pays tribute to Hugh McIlvanney
28 January 2019
The National Union of Journalists expressed sadness at the death of Hugh McIlvanney – among the greatest sports writers of his time an, for the 46 years up to his retirement, a member of the union.
John Toner, Scottish organiser, said:
“Hugh McInvanney’s sports writing revealed his subjects anew, but also extended the capabilities of language itself. That he did this in the ephemeral, but popular, medium of newsprint was redolent of the democratic ethos underpinning his work. His intense application to his craft made his weekly dispatches implicit restatements of the potential and importance of journalism – an instinct also expressed in his long membership of our union."
