15 October 2015
After years of pay freezes in the industry the NUJ is holding an event to discuss how to negotiate and campaign for better wages and fair working practices for staff and freelances as job titles change and the clickbait culture starts to bite.
This UK event is part of our programme of events for non-Delegate Meeting years and all members are welcome.
Where: UCL School of Pharmacy, 29-39 Brunswick Square, London WC1N 1AX
When: registration starts at 9.30 on Saturday 31 October 2015
We will be showcasing successful pay campaigns and providing practical advice on preparing pay claims and tips on securing a good deal. There will be speakers from all media sectors, including the Financial Times, Guardian, regional news groups and the BBC.
The event will publish the result of our confidential pay survey -- can you please make sure you complete it.
It will include discussions with experts and contributions from members attending:
- How to use restructuring talks to negotiate new pay rates in digital newsrooms.
- How Newsquest strikers won a pay rise and the London Living Wage for new workers.
- How pay campaigns can be used to boost recruitment.
- How to counteract the clickbait culture.
- How to get equal pay as a woman journalist or PR.
- How to include freelances and casuals in pay & conditions negotiations.
- How to make sure you get the proper rate for the job as a freelance.
Lewis Emery from the Labour Research Department (LRD) would like to compile an analysis of recent pay deals. He has asked for details from as many NUJ workplaces as possible. Please contact LRD giving the employer’s name and where the agreement applies, settlement date, pay increase (if any), pay rates, any other terms in the deal, and the approximate number of workers covered. Information in any format can be emailed to pay@LRD.org.uk or posted to LRD, 78 Blackfriars Road, London SE18YX (freepost) or you can send a fax to Lewis Emery at 0207 902 9815. If you have any questions, please ring 0207 902 9807. The NUJ is affiliated to LRD, an independent trade union-based research organisation and publisher. Please make sure your chapel submits information to LRD.
All members are welcome and all branches are encouraged to make sure they have a representative.
