NUJ members win access to Donald Trump degree ceremony

6 October 2010

Robert Gordon University has agreed to grant the Montrose Pictures production company access to  Donald Trump's degree presentation, following pressure from the NUJ.

The university in Aberdeen had previously banned the production company from covering the honorary degree being given to Donald Trump on 8 October 2010.

The NUJ argued that it was unacceptable for a public institution to block journalists making a feature documentary about the Donald Trump golf course development in Aberdeenshire from covering this event.

The NUJ called the university's decision a victory for the union and for press freedom.

Montrose Pictures and its sister company Wantok Productions is a supplier of news and current affairs features and documentaries to the BBC, Channel 4 and international broadcasters.

Paul Holleran, NUJ Scottish Organise, said:

"This was a shocking attempt to stop journalists from doing their business, as they attempt to hold rich and powerful people to account and I am delighted the university have relented on their decision to ban our members from the ceremony."
