NUJ marks European Stand up for Journalism Day

5 November 2008

November 5 is the European Federation of Journalists' Stand Up for Journalism Day – and it's time to remind people why journalism matters.

As news organisations look to make cutbacks across all sectors of the industry, our members have less time to do their jobs well. That has a big impact on quality journalism.

What you can do:

  • ITV News: tell us why you value your local ITV news programme. The company wants to shed 429 editorial jobs and cut hours of output, so we want to know why you think local and regional news is important.
  • UTV: if you're in Northern Ireland, write to your political represestative to protest about planned cuts at UTV.
  • Overwork: across the media, massive cuts are putting journalists under more stress than ever and causing widespread health problems. This week journalists in Newsquest are completing our stress survey.
  • Worldwide: find out what our colleagues in other countries are doing today on the website of the International Federation of Journalists,
