NUJ Derry branch show solidarity with Raif Badawi

9 September 2015

Members of the Derry North West Ireland branch of the NUJ have demonstrated in Guildhall Square, Derry, in solidarity with Saudi blogger Raif Badawi. The protest was held immediately before the monthly branch meeting.

Branch members have also held two solidarity demonstrations in the Market Square, Letterkenny, Co Donegal. The Donegal NUJ members have linked up with Amnesty International to protest.

Every time they've been on the streets, branch members have been heartened because many passers-by knew about the case – and were sympathetic.

The union in Ireland has also taken up the case, after a motion from the Derry North West Ireland branch. Members of Dublin branches have taken part in events with Amnesty International outside the Saudi Embassy.

The Derry North West Ireland branch has taken to the streets because the Saudi government's actions are a barbaric attack on free speech. The world-wide protests have focused attention and generated support for Badawi who was due to receive 1,000 lashes. He received the first 50 in January and since then there has been no more flogging.
