NUJ condemns online threats
1 August 2013
The union has condemned the online attacks women journalists have faced this week, including rape and bomb threats.
Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said:
"Violent sexist threats should not be an occupational hazard for journalists. The threats of violence are an attempt to intimidate and silence women and they will fail. The NUJ will continue to push for action from companies in the industry and the government to tackle what is clearly a growing problem."
The union calls on the government to re-establish the protective measures on third party harassment and reminds employers of their duty to protect their staff and freelance contributors.
The union continues to offer health and safety training and legal support to its members.
