NUJ condemns latest threat to journalists in Northern Ireland

11 June 2013

The Police Service in Northern Ireland (PSNI) have informed a journalist that dissident republicans have issued a death threat against them.

Nicola Coleman, NUJ Irish organiser, said:

"A free press is fundamental to a democratic society and journalists are enduring threats from both sides of the sectarian divide. The union has a proud history of standing up to such threats and will continue to do so. The NUJ calls on those who have made the threat to make no such threats in future."

A spokesperson for Belfast and District Branch of the union said:

“We are concerned with the growing number of threats being made by paramilitary groups in Northern Ireland against journalists who are carrying out their work. We call on those responsible for the latest threat to lift it and to publicly say so.”
