NUJ backs opposition to secret trial

5 June 2014

The NUJ joined media organisations and civil rights groups in objecting to a trial of two men behind closed doors at the Old Bailey.

Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said:

"The NUJ fully backs the media organisations which are objecting to the secret trial of two men, accused of a terrorist plot, due to be heard at the Old Bailey. This is an exceedingly dangerous precedent and must not go ahead. The British justice system cannot operate behind closed doors; the press must be allowed to play its crucial role in ensuring the accountability of the judicial system and the right within the constitution for fair and open trial."
