Newry Democrat strike action suspended

18 March 2011

Strike action at the Newry Democrat has been suspended following agreement by the company to attend conciliation talks at the Labour Relations Agency. The action had been been scheduled to begin on Monday.

The Alpha Newspaper Group, which owns the County Down-based publication, agreed to attend a conciliation conference at the Labour Relations Agency in Belfast. The NUJ agreed an LRA request to suspend the strike action in consequence.

Jeremy Dear, NUJ general secretary, welcomed the decision of the company to attend the LRA. The dispute arises from the imposition of compulsory redundancy at the newspaper.

Jeremy Dear said:

"The chapel has acceded to the request of the LRA in good faith and we hope the company will respond in a like manner. The NUJ reserves the right to issue industrial action notice for future dates but, of course, we hope this will not prove necessary."
