New trial offers hope for Al-Jazeera three
1 January 2015
In response to the Cairo court's decision for the retrial of three Al Jazeera jailed journalists, but not granting them bail, Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary, said:
“The decision not to allow bail to three journalists who have languished in prison for so long now is hugely disappointing. Yet again events in today’s hearing give no confidence in the legal process that now drags on further.
"Whilst a retrial offers some hope that common sense might eventually prevail, the prospect of months further behind bars is a huge blow to the journalists, their families and to justice.
"The backdrop to this case, of ongoing political manoeuvres between Egypt and Qatar, is the real story here and it is outrageous that the lives of these journalists are being put on hold while it plays out."
