The union in Scotland and Ireland have been organising events and activity to reach out to new and existing members and highlight the benefits of NUJ membership.
On Monday night the Edinburgh freelance branch organised a hugely successful meeting inviting students to hear a panel of speakers discuss how to make the transition from student journalism into the profession.
The event was chaired by Denitsa Tsekova who is the student representative for the branch and the speakers included Sam Bradley - editorial assistant at The Drum, George Ward - a multimedia journalist and broadcaster, and Franchesca Hashemi, Yasmin Morgan-Griffiths and Jen Stout who together work for The Nine at BBC Scotland.
Last week in Ireland NEC member Gerry Curran, Éanna O Ceallai of the Irish Times chapel and the union's Irish organiser Ian McGuinness joined new union members at the inaugural chapel meeting of TheJournal.ie where the NUJ ethical code of conduct played a central part in the discussions about what the union can do in a media workplace. The event was organised by the Dublin press and PR branch.
