Mubarak al-Abadi - seventh journalist killed in Yemen this year

9 August 2016

Correspondent Mubarak al-Abadi, working for Suhail TV, was killed by the al Houthi group on 5 August while covering clashes in Al-Jawf province, Yemen.

Abadi was also the head of Al Nabaa Media in Al-Jawf province. He was the main source for news and images from the area. The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS), an IFJ affiliate, said that Abadi was well known for his journalistic work and his dedication.

The IFJ, which represents 600,000 journalists worldwide, joined the YJS in mourning the death of the journalist, the seventh killed in the country in 2016.

Philippe Leruth, IFJ president, said:

"We offer our sincere condolences to Mubarak al-Abadi’s family and friends and we once again remind all groups and authorities that targeting journalists must stop and the aggressors against journalists and violators of freedom of opinion and expression must be punished. Reporters and other civilians should be protected in this unbearable war in Yemen, like everywhere in the world."

According to the IFJ's latest figures, 14 journalists remain detained by Houthis - and 1 by Al Qaida - and 9 have been tortured in Yemen since 2015.
