Minister urged to clear up potential conflicts in BAI and RTÉ nominations
8 February 2010
The NUJ in Ireland has called on the Irish communications minister to clear up publicly the potential conflicts of interest in nominations to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and RTÉ.
Séamus Dooley, Irish Secretary, sharply criticised Minister Eamon Ryan’s decision to brief a parliamentary committee in private on legal difficulties over ratification of nominees put forward by the committee. Séamus Dooley said that a mixture of secrecy and confusion further undermined confidence in the structures being created.
The NUJ has criticised the absence of broadcasting workers’ representatives and nominees reflective of trade union interests. The union is also concerned at the bias towards the independent production sector reflected in the appointments.
