The NUJ has paid tribute to Louis McRedmond who has died aged 78. Louis McRedmond was a pioneering figure in the Irish media; a distinguished journalist, educationalist and media historian.
Séamus Dooley, NUJ Irish secretary, said:
"Louis McRedmond brought erudition to journalism, coupled with a strong commitment to the highest principles of his profession. As an editor, he was meticulous and his legal background served him well.
"Generations of journalists have reason to be grateful to Louis, the first director of the original School of Journalism at the College of Commerce in Rathmines, Dublin. In this role, he helped shape the then one-year course and laid the foundation for journalism education in Ireland.
"He never lost his interest in education and, in a diverse career as author, editor and head of publications and information at Raidió Teilifís Éireann, he maintained a strong interest in journalistic ethics.
"Louis was a life member of the NUJ and served as a committee member of the retired members section of the union. He followed with interest the media and political scene and is mourned by many colleagues throughout the union.
"Sympathy is extended to his family."
