ITV cuts 'could lead to industrial action'
30 September 2008
The NUJ has warned ITV that its plan to cut 40 per cent of its regional news staff could lead to industrial action.
The union said any attempt to force through the changes without meaningful negotiations with ITV unions will be met with strong resistance, including the possibility of strike action. The cuts amount to 429 job losses.
Paul McLaughlin, NUJ national broadcasting organiser, said:
"Unless ITV meaningfully engages with unions on its plans for the future of regional news, industrial action seems inevitable.
"Any attempts to force through these massive cuts will be met with strong resistance.
"Viewers will doubtless be asking how a regulator required by parliament to maintain and strengthen public service broadcasting is allowing this to happen."
