Invitation for nominations to the Press Council of Ireland

11 July 2016

The NUJ was involved in establishing the Press Council of Ireland (PCI) and has played a pivotal role in the success of the council.

The term of office for each nominee is three years.  Nominees may serve no more than two terms.

As the current nominee will have served three years in September 2016 we are seeking expressions of interest from NUJ members in the Republic of Ireland who feel they may be suitable.

Six seats are reserved for nominees reflective of journalism. The industry representatives provide senior editorial and journalistic expertise and include one nominee of the NUJ.  There are seven non-industry representatives.

The IEC has appointed a sub-committee under the chairmanship of the cathaoirleach to accept expressions of interest from members available to serve.

Members may self-nominate. It is not necessary to secure a branch or chapel nomination.  Individuals may nominate a colleague but only with his/her permission.

Letters of interest or nomination should include a brief summary of the nominee's journalistic career.

Experience of working in the print media sector is essential. Candidates must display an interest in journalistic ethics and professional standards.

Given the nature of this position the nominee need not necessarily have a record of direct involvement in industrial relations matters but must display a commitment to trade union principles.

The nominee may claim expenses for attending meetings of the Press Council.  Loss of earnings will not be paid.

The closing date for receipt of nominations is lunchtime on Monday 5 September, 2016.

The nominating committee will make a recommendation to a meeting of the Irish Executive Council on Thursday 15 September

Nominations should be sent, in confidence, to or to Séamus Dooley, Irish Secretary, NUJ, Spencer House, Off Store Street, Dublin 1.
