Important message for photographers

The NUJ is urging all photographer members to activate an opt-out clause in the new Photoshot Contributors’ Agreement before September 15.
The new contract states “You authorise Photoshot to grant to the Collecting Society a mandate to negotiate, claim and administer the rights in respect of Secondary Uses of your Images that you have authorised Photoshot to represent you for.”
This means that Photoshot will be authorised to collect revenue from DACS (or any other collecting society) for the secondary use of images. Photoshot will then deduct a 70 per cent commission fee after recouping administration charges.
Photographers have until before September 15, 2016 to opt-out and inform Photoshot not to claim on their behalf. The NUJ has prepared a draft letter to send to Photoshot, which is available to NUJ members from firstname.lastname@example.org
John Toner, NUJ Freelance Organiser said:
“I can think of no justification for Photoshot to deduct a 70 per cent commission fee. If this deduction is made after admin charges are made, there will be precious little left for the photographer. We advise our members to deal directly with DACS in order to achieve the full payment to which they are entitled.”
You can do this via the DACS website
