18 September 2014
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has specific responsibilities set out in the Data Protection Act 1998, the Freedom of Information Act 2000, Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003.
It is in regard to the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) that Lord Justice Leveson in his report on the culture, practices and ethics of the press recommended that the ICO "take immediate steps, in consultation with the industry, to prepare and issue comprehensive good practice guidelines and advice on appropriate principles and standards to be observed by the press in the processing of personal data".
The ICO have now produced: Data protection and journalism: a guide for the media.
The ICO have also provided a separate: Quick guide on data protection for the media.
The guide is provided in relation to existing law and will be kept under review by the ICO.
The guides are not intended to take the place of industry codes of practice.
