DM2011: Stop labelling disability benefit claimants 'scroungers'

11 April 2011

The importance of fairness from the media in reporting on people claiming disability benefit was stressed by journalists at the NUJ delegate meeting in Southport.

Stephen Brookes of the union's disabled members council told delegates that labelling claimants as "scroungers" caused hostility to disabled people. He pointed out that the cost of benefit fraud, which was not to be encouraged, was eclipsed by the billions of pounds lost through computer error and underpayment.
