#DM16: Conference calls for communications review
17 April 2016
A successful motion from the union’s PR and Communications branch instructed the national executive council to “undertake a strategic communications review to decide how best to deploy available resources to promote the NUJ, its work and its achievements within and beyond the union”.
Speakers ranged from those who approved of the style and content of the NUJ journal The Journalist to delegates who felt the publication ignored important union issues.
Simon Chapman, chair of the Journalist Editorial Advisory Board, said The Journalist was about being journalist, not just about being an NUJ member.
Mark Whitehead, who moved a motion from PR and Communications branch calling for the communications review, said that while there had been recent improvements in The Journalist there was a need to take a clear analytical look at what the union was doing in communications.
Some delegates argued that the journal should be a primary source of information on news activity. Others pointed out that the current direction of the publication had been endorsed by the membership through the re-election of the current editor.
A proposal from PR and Communications branch which would have provided for the appointed, rather than election by the membership, of the next editor of The Journalist, was lost.
