Assembly member calls for safeguards for Welsh media

12 May 2010

Bethan Jenkins, Welsh Assembly member, has made a strong demand for measures to safeguard the quality and plurality of the media in Wales. The speech has has been welcomed by the NUJ.

Jeremy Dear, NUJ general secretary, said:

"The wealth of ideas put forward by Bethan Jenkins in the assembly debate on the Heart of Digital Wales report are a refreshing contrast to the stale and self-interested approach of so many media owners today.
"It is obviously pleasing for the union that she endorses much of what the NUJ's economic stimulus plan for local newspapers advocates. But she has done much more than that.
"In her important speech to the Welsh Assembly, Bethan Jenkins has pinpointed the importance of encouraging the advance of new ideas and techniques to provide a better media service for communities.
"I hope other parliamentarians in the UK – as well as those more directly involved in the development of our media – will consider her remarks carefully."
